Master Class | Making your Mark on the Landscape with Ross Laurie

Art Est. is delighted to welcome Ross Laurie as guest tutor for this Master Class. Ross captivates his students with his thought-provoking teaching style and warm rapport. This Master Class has a focus on observing images of landscape and ways to translate the landscape into art using oils or acrylics.  The workshop is about drawing and painting from your own images and memory, and being exposed to ideas and influences that will assist in you reaching your full potential guided by Ross. We will look at and break down significant paintings, and how some of these principles apply to us.

Ross Laurie studied in Sydney, Bathurst, London, Newcastle on Tyne, Melbourne. He has had 20 solo shows, including 5 at King St Gallery on William, and 50 group shows, including Wynn’s Prize, Dobell Prize and Salon des Refusés.  He is the winner of Norville art Prize, Paddington Art Prize and Cofa print residency, and Kings Art Prize.

What to expect

Students can expect to:

• learn to see the landscape and find a way to re-organise what you see into a successfully built painting. 
• learn about spontaneity vs calculation in your composition
• extend their art practice through an understanding of the composition of forms, tones and colours

The hope is that all participants will have a clearer idea of their intent and ideas, and how to achieve this. 

Ross' approach includes technical discussion as well as providing individual attention to students to help develop their own voice.

Is this class right for me?

This is a master class-style workshop and is not for beginners. This workshop would suit those with some ideas and experience, who have work to begin or carry on with.

Materials list

• Students can bring along finished works and works in progress for discussion and resolution.
• For new paintings, bring some canvasses or canvas boards
• Some paper or a sketchbook and some drawing materials, ie pencil or charcoal or ink.
• Bring your usual acrylic/oil painting materials including your palette, brushes, palette knives, paints and mediums.
• Paints: acrylic or oil paint. Range of colours.. black, white, warm red, cool red ( ie cadmium and Alizarin) warm and cool blue, same with yellow, raw umber, burnt umber, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, Venetian red or red ochre or oxide. 
• Oil painters may only use ODOURLESS SOLVENT AND MEDIUMS. 
• Bring jars with lids to take away spent solvents and mediums.
• Rags and paper towels

Bring your lunch. Tea and coffee is provided.
