Ceramics | Hand-Building for Beginners with Carol Hudson
This one-day workshop with artist Carol Hudson, packs a wide range of ceramic hand building techniques into a single 6-hour session. Designed to inspire, and ignite your creativity, this workshop will give you the skills to get you started in making fabulous ceramics works.
Carol’s workshops are social, fun and rich in ideas and possibilities. She will share her secrets of making refined, beautiful, elegant and simple functional ceramics.
What to expect
Project 1: Pinch pot method with texture
Carol will guide you through making simple pinch pots into cups, vases, candle holders, lidded bowls... your choices are infinite.
You will also explore a range of texture possibilities to use on your finished piece.
Project 2: Slump mold bowl and lid, joining and perforating
You will be guided you through making slump molds into bowls — perhaps for a tealight lamp, lidded serving bowl or something else that inspires you.
You will also explore how to join clay, how to perforate your work, and using stamps to create pattern and texture for your finished item.
Project 3: Slab rolled platter, underglaze and pressings
You will explore making plates from rolled out clay using our slab roller. Carol will guide you through pressing flowers or other materials into your pieces and using coloured underglazes.
What will you achieve?
During this workshop, you will:
Create at least 3 small but beautiful ceramic pieces
Learn 3 essential ceramics hand building techniques — pinch pots, slumping, and slab building
Learn professional tips and tricks for hand building with clay
Learn how to add texture to clay surfaces
Learn about the ceramics making processes and how to ensure the success of your work.
Is this course right for me?
This class is suitable for anyone from absolute beginners to more experienced students who would like to learn other creative approaches to ceramics. You will have the scope to make each project your own.
Material list
Included in the workshop fee: earthenware clay, a limited colour range of underglazes for use, and the bisque and glaze firing of your work. Additional clay can be purchased from Art Est as needed. Larger or additional pieces made in class will be fired at $12kg.
The workshop includes a limited number of underglaze colours. If you would like more specialised colours for your work, they are available at local suppliers and online, click here. to see a list of local art supply retailers.

Art Est Art School is located at 10 Hill Street Leichhardt, on the corner of Hill Street and John Street on the Annandale side of Leichhardt in Sydney's inner west.
Parking
There is no on-site parking. Please allow time to find parking in the surrounding streets which is free and untimed. Please respect our neighbours and do not park outside our premises as this section of Hill Street is a narrow, dead-end street with resident and commercial business parking only. Thank you.
Public Transport
If taking Public Transport, take the 470 Bus to Moore Street Leichhardt and alight at John Street.
If travelling by train, it is a good 20 minute walk from Stanmore Station via Young Street.
The closest Light Rail stop is Lilyfield. Cross the City West Link and walk along Catherine Street and turn left at Hill Street. Allow 15-20 minutes walk time depending on your pace.
