In this two-night workshop with ceramicist Gretel Corrie, you will make 3 pinch technique porcelain items in beautiful white porcelain, including mug, bowl and dish set.
Gretel packs a lot into this 5-hour session. Designed to inspire, and ignite your creativity, this workshop gives you the skills and knowledge to get you started in making beautiful pinched technique works.
Gretel will share her secrets of making refined, beautiful, elegant and simple functional ceramics.
What to expect
Gretel will guide you through making 2 pinched technique porcelain set — including mug, bowl and dish or side plate.
Initially, with Gretel, you will design and plan your items, then create slabs of clay to be cut to size for constructing your 3 items.
You will learn how to successfully join slabs of clay to create your items. Gretel will guide you through creating the “pinched” texture for the surface of your items.
After the workshop, your finished items will be dried, bisque fired, clear gloss glazed and then glaze fired.
What will you achieve?
During this workshop, you will:
Create at 3 pinched technique porcelain items in beautiful white porcelain:
- 1 mug (or espresso cup)
- 1 bowl
- 1 dish or side plate
- Learn to roll clay slabs for hand building
- Learn the slab building technique and how to join slabs to create your items
- Learn the pinched technique to create texture
- Learn professional tips and tricks for hand building with clay
- Learn about the ceramics making processes and how to ensure the success of your work.
Is this course right for me?
This class is suitable for anyone from absolute beginners to more experienced students who would like to learn other creative approaches and using porcelain. You will have the scope to make each project your own.
Material list
Included in the workshop fee 1kg of midfire porcelain clay, bisque firing, clear gloss glazing and glaze firing of your work. Additional clay can be purchased from Art Est as needed. Larger or additional pieces made in class will be fired at $12kg.
You will need to bring:
- a small fettling knife with a smooth unserrated blade
- a metal needle tool

Will my vessels be fired?
Standard pieces made as part of your course program will be bisque, clear gloss glazed and glaze fired as part of your course fee. Your work will then be food, dishwasher safe. Larger or additional pieces made in class will be fired at $12kg. Works made outside of the Artest studio cannot be fired in our kilns.
