Art Est. is delighted to welcome Idris Murphy back as guest tutor to our Summer Art School. Students are encouraged to bring finished works and works in progress and Idris will work with students on an individual basis. You could also start new works as part of this master class. The workshop focuses on using acrylic paints, but oil painters are also welcome.

Leading Australian contemporary landscape painter, Idris Murphy, is one of the most individual and highly respected artists working in Australia. Recently, he was one of the featured artists in the SBS documentary, Two Thirds Sky Artists in Desert Country. He graduated from National Art School with a diploma in Painting in 1971 and then became the institution’s Head of Drawing in 1997. Idris exhibits at King Street Gallery on William.

Find out more about Idris as he discusses his art practice with Maria Stoljar in her Talking with Painters Podcast from August 2022.

What to expect

Students can expect to:

  • learn about formal areas of contemporary painting
  • extend their art practice through an understanding of the relationship between the illusions of space; the ability to compose a work, and the use of colour in painting

Idris's approach includes technical discussion as well as providing individual attention to students to help develop their own voice.

Course testimonials:

  • Idris Murphy was incredibly generous with his time and knowledge. As well as an extensive library of personal art books, Idris provided an insight into his en plein air process and use of mediums. Idris shared knowledge appropriate to each student's style and skill level. The studio and other facilities made for relaxed yet focused study which was no small feat given the first day reached 40C. An excellent weekend workshop, Thank you.
  • Idris shared a wealth of art knowledge and took the time to explain to us how to understand and interpret paintings or drawings, based on rules of colour or the drawn line. I found it a particularly rewarding two days, where Idris encouraged me to explore and play within the style I was interested in. Fascinating and inspiring.
  • Idris is a passionate tutor who shares his extensive knowledge generously. He ran a few short teaching sessions each day then spent a substantial amount of time with us individually. These sessions were particularly inspiring as Idris used his personal reference material to demonstrate his ideas and direction for our own work. My objective for the masterclass was to change my old paradigm and Idris gave me the tools to shift it. Now I just need to keep painting to bed it down!
