Join prize-winning artist Mathew Lynn for an engaging 2-day workshop designed just for teens! Immerse yourself in the world of classical drawing and oil painting as you learn essential techniques that will elevate your art to new heights.

You’ll begin by experimenting with various drawing techniques, including pencil, charcoal, ink on white paper, and the classic three-colour Conte method (white, sanguine, and black) on brown paper. Mathew will guide you through the fundamentals of proportions and perspective, helping you transform your sketches into impressive paintings.

After mastering drawing basics, you’ll dive into the vibrant world of oil painting. You’ll gain a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of the medium, including how to use materials correctly, the qualities of pigments, mixing colours, understanding tone, and combining colour and tone.

What will I take home?

You’ll create a monochrome still life painting featuring a live object that’s important to you, a colour painting based on your choice of subject, and even recreate a masterpiece from an old master.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have crafted stunning artworks and gained a deeper understanding of the artistic process, setting the stage for your future creative endeavours. Whether you’re considering a pursuing visual art to HSC level or simply want to develop your skills, this workshop is the perfect starting point!

What to bring

To make the most of this experience, bring along a selection of images that inspire you—whether it’s a landscape, portrait, something figurative (which could include animals), or anything you’d like to explore. These will serve as references for your drawings and paintings. For the still life, bring an object that holds personal significance to you. Your free choice colour painting will be carefully developed from your drawings, and you can bring in your old master image to work from or choose one from our library.
