Overview
This series of three masterclass workshops is positioned to be experienced as individual modular workshops or together as three workshops, with a connected multidisciplinary approach to expanding one's creative vocabulary. You can choose to book the workshops as individual masterclasses or as a carefully combined group of three workshops.
Students will gain skills in understanding composition, tonal design and colour harmony through research drawing practice. This practical approach to research drawing and colour studies will enable students to discover gestural elements and colour nuances in landscape painting.

What to expect: Mixed Media
This workshop creates an environment for the spontaneous and direct approach to image making. Working in a large format on high GSM archival paper, students can use a creative combination of all manner of water-base media including dry pigment, inks, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, gauche, acrylic and collage. This is the ideal workshop to explore the subject of landscape which can then be developed into a painting using acrylics or oils. Mixed media will become an essential tool in developing ideas, colours and a vocabulary of mark making for future paintings. Expect to create a large scale work on paper using mixed media that will surprise and satisfy your creative aspirations. You will gain in depth knowledge on the combination and use of a wide variety of water based media. Working directly and spontaneously on large format archival paper you will extend your mark making vocabulary and increase your creative confidence.
Is this course right for me?
This is a master class for experienced painters and assumes prior painting experience.
Materials
For the mixed media colour studies:
Image Resources:
First you will need an image of a subject to work from. This approach is ideal for the subject of landscape however you can really work with anything of interest such as still life, interior, portrait or abstraction. It is recommended to bring along a selection of images in the form of photographs and/or drawings which can be evaluated and discussed to find the most suitable composition. Remember you can bring the images on your phone or ipad and then print in colour the ones you need at Art Est as a4 or A3 (for a small fee).
Art Materials: Paper
Next you will need one or two sheets of Stonehenge paper sized at 560x760mm. This machine made sheet has a slight, even texture that compliments many artistic pursuits. It combines a 250gsm beefy weight, 2 deckle edges, strong surface, excellent acceptance of ink and wet media and pleasant feel. Internally sized, made of 100% cotton. As an alternative you can use Canson Edition Printmaking Papers which are the same size and GSM as Stonehenge. If you have trouble getting hold of the paper, Art Est will have sheets of Canson available for purchase at $10 per sheet (Cash). Also bring your sketchbook for notes and support drawings.
Art Materials: Drawing and painting
In this workshop you are encouraged to combine any or all forms of water based media, including: Charcoal, chalk pastels, oil pastels, oil sticks, dry pigments(non toxic only), coloured pencils, watercolors, guaches, acrylics and inks. Combine this with your favourite water based brushes including Chinese calligraphy brushes. Note that Art Est will provide the dry pigments, binder medium and a limited range acrylic and inks as well as loan of Chinese calligraphy brushes if needed. For colours I suggest two variations of Yellow, Red and Blue along with white and a burnt or raw umber to mix a coloured black.
