Overview

This series of three masterclass workshops is positioned to be experienced as individual modular workshops or together as three workshops, with a connected multidisciplinary approach to expanding one's creative vocabulary. You can choose to book the workshops as individual masterclasses or as a carefully combined group of three workshops.

Students will gain skills in understanding composition, tonal design and colour harmony through research drawing practice. This practical approach to research drawing and colour studies will enable students to discover gestural elements and colour nuances in landscape painting.

What to expect: Monotypes

Monotype printmaking is a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface and then printing a single print hence monotype or monoprint. It has a unique print, typically painterly in effect. A monotype can be achieved using all manner of mediums including watercolour, gouache, acrylic or oils. Monotypes are a useful and versatile way to explore your subject in a painterly way and can be the perfect medium to loosen up your painting practice. Expect to create a series of prints that will stand apart from your painting and reside in the unique space between printmaking and painting. You will gain technical knowledge on monotype printmaking choosing from a variety of mediums including gouache, acrylics and oils. Working on a monotype is a useful way to loosen up your painting practice and create artwork prints that add a new dimension to your practice.

Is this course right for me?

This is a master class for experienced painters and assumes prior painting experience.

Materials

For the monotype studies:

Image Resources:
First you will need an image of a subject to work from. This approach is ideal for subjects with less detail and broader planes of colour. Anything of interest such as landscape, still life, interior, portrait or abstraction. It is recommended to bring along a selection of images in the form of photographs and/or drawings which can be evaluated and discussed to find the most suitable composition. Remember you can bring the images on your phone or ipad and then print in colour the ones you need at Art Est as a4 or A3 (for a small fee).

Art Materials: Paper
Next you will need one or two sheets of Stonehenge paper sized at 560x760mm. This machine made sheet has a slight, even texture that compliments many artistic pursuits. It combines a 250gsm beefy weight, 2 deckle edges, strong surface, excellent acceptance of ink and wet media and pleasant feel. Internally sized, made of 100% cotton. As an alternative you can use Canson Edition Printmaking Papers which are the same size and GSM as Stonehenge. If you have trouble getting hold of the paper, Art Est will have sheets of Canson available for purchase at $10 per sheet (Cash). Also bring your sketchbook for notes and support drawings.

Art Materials: Painting on the Plate
A variety of monotype plates in different sizes will be available for use during the workshop. All you need to bring are your paints, palette, brushes, medium and painting rags. For watercolour and gouache you don’t need medium as the paint effectively dries onto the plate; for acrylics you will need some Matisse Open Medium or any slow drying medium so the paint doesn't dry on the plate; and for oils you will need linseed oil to add to the plate. For colours I suggest two variations of Yellow, Red and Blue along with white and a burnt or raw umber to mix a coloured black.
